6 Reasons your little ones hair isn’t Growing

Posted by Jade Boddie on

Children's hair grows and thrives more at a young age. So how you treat it at a young age is how you set a lot of the tone in their older & adult hair life. It’s important to know children of African Descent and curly, kink hair texture must have a different hair regimen than children of other races. For our children’s hair is unique and we must treat it as such, if your struggling with growing your child’s hair you maybe experiencing something your doing wrong in the list below:

  1. You shampoo their hair too often
  2. Using the wrong products on their hair
  3. Putting rubber bands in their hair too tightly
  4. Overly brushing & combing it
  5. Using cotton items on hair
  6. Lack of hydration & moisture.

  1. Children under the age of 3 typically don’t need any shampoo in their hair shampoos job is to strip away any oils & cleanse the hair & scalp but children’s scalp doesn’t carry much product build up as older children and adults may so warm water is all that’s needed for cleansing their hair.
  2. Children of African descent should not be using any petroleum on their hair & scalp. Many mothers use grease, baby oil or Vaseline to help aid their children’s hair but these items should never be placed on their hair. Using butters & light oils are better for your little one. If looking for the right mixture of light oils to help keep hair moisturized & soft I recommend, Children’s Hair to Toe Balm.
  3. I love seeing littles ones hair in cute pony tails as much as the next I’ve even placed a few in my 1 year olds hair BUT yes it’s a But to this we must reframe mothers & fathers from putting pony tail holders like rubber bands in our little ones hair especially under the age of 1.
  4. Brushing & combing the hair is a way of smoothing the hair into a section or detangling the hair. Especially those fly away pieces of hair. When growing up my mother told me to brush my hair 100x a day and it would help my hair grow. Right now I’m doing a hard eye roll cause the lies I’ve been told growing up is ridiculous. The truth is NO it doesn’t help it grow in fact it can cause hair loss when you constantly brush or comb the hair.
  5. Curl hair works best without any cotton items which is why my household uses nothing but silk & micro fiber items. Even newborns can have a benefit of using silk & micro fiber items. Micro fiber is a fast water absorbent material and doesn’t snag at the hair or cause knots like cotton will. Silk is perfect for night time sleeping on whether it’s a pillow case, bonnet, scarf, or a nice silk blanket for the baby to lay on top of.
  6. Lacking hydration & moisture for the hair can be a huge culprit in the lack of your child’s hair growth. Be sure to balance the 2 for your little ones hair lack of hydration can result in dryness and breakage.
